She Found Joy #9: Holly Christine Hayes: From Addiction to Freedom In Christ

October 15, 2018 • Leave a Comment

She Found Joy Podcast #9 with Holly Christine Hayes

The lovely Holly Christine Hayes joins me today for She Found Joy #9. After discovering Holly was a fellow writer and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel lover on Instagram, I just knew I had to have this likeminded sister on the show! Aside from being a wife, writer, speaker and dog mama, Holly is the founder of The Sanctuary Project, a community of trafficking, violence and addiction survivors and their advocates with a mission of creating beautiful products with messages of hope.

Sidenote: She Found Joy might be teaming up with The Sanctuary Project in Austin, TX as part of the 2019 Ladies Night Out Tour, so stay tuned!

In this episode of the She Found Joy Podcast, Holly and I chat about:

  • The dangers of escapism and how to break free from the chains of addiction.
  • Spiritual disciplines that lead to healing and wholeness.
  • The heart transformation and freedom Christ offers verses the behavior modification and sin management the world advocates.
  • Resting in the overwhelming love and grace of Jesus
  • How to help others going through addiction

P.S. If you’ve been blessed by the She Found Joy Podcast, or if this episode blesses you, it would mean the world to me if you left a review on iTunes. This will help more people find the show and learn more about the joy of Jesus.

Let’s Dive Into the Deep {+ A Sneak Peek of My First Book Cover!}

July 25, 2018 • 7 Comments

Living by faith can feel scary. Sometimes it feels like we’re treading water out in the ocean, with no sight of land and no place to secure our feet. Sometimes the deep waters of life can leave us feeling worn out, battered and bruised. Sometimes the waves make us feel like we’re going under. Have you ever felt that way? I found myself feeling this way in high school, after battling panic attacks, and again in my early 20s, after being handed a debilitating health diagnosis.

In these moments of distress, when the deep waters around me started churning with an untamable force, I knew I had two options. I could sink. Or I could learn how to swim with Jesus as I put my faith in Him and trusted His Word for my life.

I cannot even begin to tell you how many questions I grappled with during these seasons of life: How can I trust a God that is allowing all these bad things to happen to me? Is God really good? Can God really be trusted? Is the Bible really truth I can rely on? How can I exchange fear for faith? The answers to these questions and the lessons I learned saved my life — and they also became a book!

After working toward becoming a published author for the last five years, I could not be more excited to unveil the cover of my first book, Into the Deep: Diving Into a Life of Courageous Faith (which releases November 6!!!)

This book is an invitation to dive headfirst into a life of courageous faith and, in the process, exchange fear and frustration for holy confidence and joy. Together, we will discover that we do not have to drown in the deep waters of life. With Jesus by our side, we can learn how to overcome and see that we are warriors of the deep:

We are more than conquerors.
In Him, we are strong.
In Him, we are courageous.
In Him, we are victorious.
And because Jesus lives in us, we will overcome the waves.

This is my hope and prayer for all of us — that we would learn to be warriors of the deep who overcome every high and stormy gale by clinging to our faith in Jesus!

Finding Joy #55: Barb Roose: Winning the Worry Battle Once and for All

April 23, 2018 • 5 Comments

Winning the worry battle is possible with Jesus!

Today is a super exciting day, 1) because one of my best friends, Barb Roose is joining me on the podcast and 2) while this episode marks the end of the “Finding Joy” season of my ministry, it marks the beginning of an amazing new frontier, and I couldn’t imagine a better way to wrap this chapter up than with Barb.

Don’t worry, I’ll still be podcasting, writing and speaking. But I’m going to take a break for a little while as I get ready to share with y’all the NEW THING God has spoken over me and my ministry. I can’t wait until the day comes for me to unveil all of this to you, but until then, don’t miss my incredible conversation with Barb (and while I’m taking a break, feel free to catch up on the other 54 episodes too!) OK, onto today’s show.

Barb Roose joins me today for Finding Joy #55. Barb is not only one of my best friends, but she’s also an amazing speaker and the author of several books, including the recently released Joshua: Winning the Worry Battle book and Bible Study companion.

As you’ll hear in our conversation today, Barb spent years struggling to get a grip on the worries, anxieties and mental movies that attacked the victorious position she had been given in Christ. People told her to “just pray about it and trust God,” but the worries remained. Barb’s journey in overcoming worry led her to write books that would provide others with practical techniques and biblical tools to win the worry battle once and for all.

In this episode, Barb and and I talk about those books and discuss practical strategies to beat worry and claim God’s victory in this fight of faith—day in and day out. We also talk about the value in learning to view uncertainty from God’s perspective rather than our own. Uncertainty can drive us mad if we let it, but Barb has found another way to deal with the unknowns of the life.

I love what Barb had to say regarding the breakthrough she had in learning to change her perspective and get comfortable with uncertainty. “I came to a point where I realized that God has no cliffhangers,” she says. “And if he has no cliffhangers, that means we can trust that the information He’s given us is all we can handle for right now. And the rest of the uncertainties? Well, when it is time, He will let us know what else we need to know and give us what we need.”

I hope you enjoy our conversation, and please don’t miss the chance to enter to win a copy of Barb’s latest book below!

P.S. If you’ve been blessed by the Finding Joy Podcast, or if this episode blesses you, it would mean the world to me if you left a review on iTunes. This will help more people find the show and learn more about the joy of Jesus.

Finding Joy #52: Connie Bartlett: Living with Purpose, Grief and Raising Blended Families

April 2, 2018 • 3 Comments

Lord, have your way in me.

Connie Bartlett joins me today for Finding Joy #52. Connie is a wife, mother, blogger and she’s also my fabulous assistant for the Finding Joy Ladies Night Out events! (She will actually be speaking on the panel at the Woodstock, Georgia event on Oct. 7.)

As you’ll hear in our conversation today, Connie spent years thinking her purpose in life was to climb the corporate ladder so she could gain the world’s definition of success. She worked tirelessly to become the director of marketing twice at big insurance companies, but after losing her mom and her job in 2017, God awakened Connie to realize that there was so much more to life.

While such tragedies could cause someone to turn away from the faith, Connie instead drew closer to God as she learned to grieve in a holy and healthy way. It was from this place of grief that God wooed her back into his arms to see her true purpose in Him.

In addition to talking about living with purpose, Connie and I talk about the challenges and blessings of raising and loving children well in a blended family situation. We also talk about how to communicate well in marriage and why it’s important to pray and grow together as the years go on.

P.S. If you’ve been blessed by the Finding Joy Podcast, or if this episode blesses you, it would mean the world to me if you left a review on iTunes. This will help more people find the show and learn more about the joy of Jesus.

Letting God Satisfy Our Every Longing {+ Finding Joy #42 with Asheritah Ciuciu}

November 6, 2017 • 5 Comments

I watched her laugh as she stacked her plate with enough desserts to feed an entire family.

God satisfies every longing of our heart, mind and soul.

“I’m probably going to gain five pounds and go into a food coma,” she said to anyone who might be listening.

Others waiting in line joined her in a cackle of laughter. But as I looked at the women standing around the dessert table, I saw their faces told a less happy story than the laughter coming out of their mouths. Because on their faces, I didn’t see joy. Instead I saw fear, shame and sadness.

I’ve been around enough women and fought enough of my own food battles to know this scenario is far from uncommon. When it comes to our relationship with food, many of us either worship or fear it, and neither experience is what the Lord desires for us.

Food is a good and gracious gift from our Father. We need it to survive. We need it to thrive. But it is not the be all end all of our existence, and eating more or less of it will never satisfy our hungry souls.

In Matthew 4:4, Jesus says, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” So, while we need food, this verse reminds us that without God’s Word, we will never truly be satisfied. The ache within our heart can only be filled by the one who causes it to beat.

We can eat eight slices of chocolate cake or none at all, but either way, the answer to our deepest longings to feel whole, worthy and loved is not found in the cake. Satisfaction is only found when we seek Jesus with everything we have and ask Him to satisfy us from the inside out.

Satisfaction is found in seeking Jesus, the only satisfier of our souls.

Food may satisfy us temporarily, but God satisfies us forever.

This truth was made very real to me in February 2017, when I underwent sinus surgery for a deviated septum. After waking up from anesthesia, I realized I had no sense of taste or smell. The nurse gave me applesauce, but if I hadn’t known any better I would have thought it was liquified sawdust. I should have been grateful for the sustenance, but every bite made me sink deeper into sadness and I longed to be able to taste what I was eating. Later that day I cried opening a can of soup. And that’s when I realized: I had a food fixation.

As a former food blogger who still does recipe development on the side, I can’t say I was surprised. I used to make a decent living photographing and making food. I lived for creating recipes. I dreamed about textures and flavor combinations. But, while all of that is fine and good, somewhere along the line I became obsessed. If I’m honest, I looked forward to eating food more than I looked forward to spending time with God.

I wouldn’t wish sinus surgery on anyone, but I don’t regret it, because God used it to help free me from the food fixation trap I had fallen into. After not being able to taste or smell food for weeks, I began to see food through a different light. Instead of being a slave to thinking about food 24/7, I was freed to enjoy food for what it really is — nourishment for my body. And that, sweet friends, was a beautiful and amazing thing.

Food was never meant to satisfy our souls. It sustains our bodies, but the satisfaction piece? That can only be filled by God and God alone.

If you’ve ever struggled with food fixation or any form of idolatry, this podcast is definitely for you! Join Asheritah Ciuciu on the Finding Joy Podcast and I as we talk about how she learned to cultivate a healthy relationship with food in exchange for a bigger appetite for God.

Running Into the Light, Finding Joy Again {+ Free Printable and Wallpaper}

August 28, 2017 • 15 Comments

When it’s a picture-perfect day outside, smiling comes naturally. If the sun is shining, the birds are chirping, the breeze is blowing and the sky is blue, that should be enough to be joyful, right?

the sun is rising

I remember when it used to be enough.

There was a time when finding joy came easily for me, especially when the weather wielded a beautiful day. I’d lace up my sneakers, walk outside and smile blissfully as I breathed in the sweet smell of pine, tasted the fresh air and felt the warm sun flood my face.

But sitting on my best friend’s couch the other night, I cried as I had to admit: I’m not the same joyful person I used to be.

It’s true — for being a woman who hosts a podcast named “Finding Joy,” I’m not as quick to find joy as I once was.

Several years ago, before we had a name for my health problems, I found a beautiful print that read, “today, I choose joy.” At this point in my life, I was starting to understand that experiencing joy really was a choice. It didn’t matter if my life was turning out to be a fairytale dream or a complete mess — I could choose to be miserable, or I could choose joy.

Most of the time, making the right choice wasn’t too difficult of a task. But on the hard days, I needed a visual reminder to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus. So, after downloading the print, I immediately made it the background to my computer screen.

Though I didn’t realize it at the time, today I can see that having “today, I choose joy,” constantly in front of my face is what kept me accountable and helped me make better decisions each and every day.

I don’t remember when I changed my computer background, but somewhere along the way, the “today, I choose joy,” print was no more.

And then somewhere along the way, life got hard.

And with that hardness came a slow and silent hardening of my own heart. It’s not like I woke up one morning and instantly felt cold, sad and bitter toward the world. I didn’t want my heart to become hard … it just happened.

The more I dwelled on the mess of my life, and the more I forgot to choose joy, the harder my heart became and the harder it was to find joy in the everyday.

When life got hard, I stopped looking for the good in people and situations. When life sent me disappointment after disappointment, I stopped expecting things to work out. Instead of focusing on what would go right, I focused on what could go wrong. When life didn’t get better, I wallowed in my brokenness. When life overwhelmed me, I grew ashamed of the woman I’d become.

All of this overwhelm is what led me to my best friend’s couch just weeks ago. We’d shared Dairy Queen ice cream together, and talked and cried for hours …

And that’s when the question hit me: When had I become so negative? When had I become fixated on my brokenness? When had I stopped looking for the good in my life and in my faith?

Let us not grow weary of seeking and living in joy. Let us cling to our faith, for it is good.

As a writer and a speaker, I tell others to seek God’s face and choose joy in ALL circumstances, but could the same be said of me? I shuddered to myself as I had to admit: no, no it couldn’t.

I wonder if you’ve ever felt the same way.

The morning after spending some time with my sweet friend, I took out a piece of paper, and on it I wrote: It’s time to start seeing beyond the struggle. It’s time to redeem and celebrate the faith I have in Christ. It’s time to walk away from the dark and toward the light. These three declarations are the standards I’m holding myself to these days.Read More
